Charlie Winshaw as a character was born out of that thought experiment.ĭev and Charlie’s characters seem like such polar opposites when you break down their interests and favourite things. But for some reason, I couldn’t get this idea out of my head, and I kept wondering under what circumstances someone like me might end up on those shows and what would happen if they did. ![]() I’m queer, and those shows are predominately heteronormative, and I have various mental health struggles, which would likely be exploited or vilified on a show like The Bachelor. I was single at the time, and therefore a prime candidate on the surface, but I quickly dismissed the thought because people like me are never featured on those shows. I’ve been in a complicated love-hate relationship with The Bachelor franchise for many years, and the idea for this book came out of a daydream one afternoon where I wondered what would happen if someone like me went on a reality dating show. ![]() What was your inspiration for The Charm Offensive? ![]()
