David wellington the last astronaut6/27/2023 The appearance of this object encourages NASA to send one last mission - involving the last-living astronaut, Sally Jansen - to make first contact. NASA’s space exploration division has long since been shut down after a few fatal and high-profile accidents, and private companies have stepped in to fill that niche. To boil the book down to its premise, The Last Astronaut is a story about an alien object that is on course to enter Earth’s atmosphere. I thought that The Last Astronaut would be such a book, and it was… to an extent. The kind where the characters have to rely on good, old-fashioned science and hack-job engineering to get out of a jam. I’ve a bit of a soft spot for hard sci-fi stories. Out of time and options, NASA turns to its last living astronaut – Commander Sally Jansen, who must lead a team of raw recruits on a mission to make First Contact.īut as the object reveals its secrets, Jansen and her crew find themselves in a desperate struggle for survival – against the cold vacuum of space, and something far, far worse. A huge alien object has entered the solar system and is now poised above the Earth.

The unlikely disciple by kevin roose6/27/2023 To improve the ruse, he added his voice to the 300-strong Thomas Road Baptist Church choir, joined weekly Bible studies and one-on-one prayer sessions with his dorm buddies, and even traveled to Daytona Beach during spring break to evangelize on the frontlines. After an attempt to interact honestly with his fundamentalist peers was met with awkward silence and resistance, Roose decided to go undercover, pretending to be a recently converted evangelical Christian in order to write about the reality of life on campus. Instead of cavorting through the major European capitals for a semester like many students his age, Roose shocked family and friends by enrolling at one of the nation’s most conservative Christian universities. Lay some parchment paper out onto a cookie sheet or cutting board and pour the colored rice on top to let dry for several hours. Place the rice, vinegar, and food coloring all in a large, sealed ziploc baggie, and shake/mix it all up until your rice is completely covered. You can always add more as you go so maybe start with less and see how it goes. A few drops of food coloring - The more food coloring you add, the more vibrant color you will get. You could also use dried beans, uncooked corn kernels (un-popped popcorn), dry, uncooked pasta, or even kinetic sand. I happened to have a stash of green dyed rice that I wanted to use as our base this time to look like grass. There are tons of different sensory bin fillers, and lots that you could even use for this bin in particular. You really can’t go wrong with a good, simple, sensory bin. Anytime a child is engaged in sensory play, they are likely developing language skills, social skills, creative thinking, and problem-solving, all the while exploring new materials, and their senses. This was such a simple sensory play set up but allowed for so much open-ended, imaginative play. Against empathy6/26/2023 To see empathy in action, we can look at the aftermath of a tragedy like the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School. But what exactly does empathy mean?Įmpathy is a way of understanding and sharing the feelings of another person. It’s often talked about in conversations, usually referring to someone who could use more of it. Big Idea #1: Empathy is an emotional response that allows us to understand and feel what others go through.Įmpathy is an important emotional resource. You’ll learn about mirrors neurons, which help us learn faster and why Make-A-Wish Foundation isn’t always the best charity. Instead, look at the biases that make people show more sympathy for some tragedies than others. If you want to see more compassion in the world, don’t blame a lack of empathy. This is why it’s not a good idea to rely on empathy alone when trying to relate to people who have been affected by these tragedies. If you’re honest with yourself, you might feel more grief for some victims than others. It seems like there are a lot of tragic events happening all over the world. 1-Page Summary of Against Empathy Overview Laura ingalls wilder home6/26/2023 Several years ago, shortly after I moved to Arkansas it dawned on me that Laura had spent most of her adult life in my new neighboring state of Missouri. After all the pioneer times were sooooooooooo long ago. It never occurred to me that her house could still be around. However, it never really occurred to me that places might exist where I could go and see the things that Laura saw. I knew that Laura was a ‘real’ person and that the stories, although fictionalized, were based on actual things that had happened to the actual Laura. I have even been known to dress in Pioneer clothing from time to time. That somewhere deep down we “knew” each other and were connected on some level. As a child, I was often making things as they may have in the pioneer times. I have always loved the idea of self-sufficiency and living off the land. I have such a place in my heart for it that if I believed in reincarnation I would believe one of my past lives was during the pioneer times. In fact, I love just about anything to do with “pioneer” times and prairie culture. I love the Little House on the Prairie book series written by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Alison cochrun the charm offensive6/26/2023 To an extent, I do believe opposites attract. Charlie Winshaw as a character was born out of that thought experiment.ĭev and Charlie’s characters seem like such polar opposites when you break down their interests and favourite things. But for some reason, I couldn’t get this idea out of my head, and I kept wondering under what circumstances someone like me might end up on those shows and what would happen if they did. I’m queer, and those shows are predominately heteronormative, and I have various mental health struggles, which would likely be exploited or vilified on a show like The Bachelor. I was single at the time, and therefore a prime candidate on the surface, but I quickly dismissed the thought because people like me are never featured on those shows. I’ve been in a complicated love-hate relationship with The Bachelor franchise for many years, and the idea for this book came out of a daydream one afternoon where I wondered what would happen if someone like me went on a reality dating show.
